Kiss Me Son of Extras: The Guitar (Outer Planet Mix)
Moon landings. Space walks. Space phone calls?
I’m writing about every song from every full studio album by They Might Be Giants. These posts are for the other songs.
The EP tracks. The rarities. The songs that didn’t make the main record but somehow made permanent homes in my life.
This is Kiss Me, Son of Extras.
Remember Limewire? The early torrenting platform from the year two-thousand? Although this EP was available as early as 1992, I don’t think I found it until I searched Limewire for anything They Might Be Giants related. I enjoy hearing a remix of a song I love and this one is especially included.
This Outer Planet Mix of The Guitar feels like a true Apollo mission into the cosmos. It features samples of President Richard Nixon's phone call to Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin during their moon landing. If I was in a club, and this song came on… oh, man.
It contains enough of the original elements to be recognized as The Guitar but also entirely different. It’s like trying your favorite coffee brewery’s americano but this time, iced with club soda, a splash of orange juice. It’s still got that small town roasting flavor but absolutely remixed (also VERY good. I highly recommend you try that drink.)
You’re reading a post from Kiss Me, Son of Extras. A series of posts for the TMBG songs that don’t live on a big studio album. These posts are for the EP tracks, the rarities. The ones tucked away in between bigger releases but are also woven into my actual life.
