Kiss Me, Son of Extras: Kitten Intro, Now That I Have Everything, Weep Day, and MORE
Happy 29th Anniversary to Then: The Earlier Years! Let's celebrate by listening some of the rare treasures contained within.
I’m writing about every song from every full studio album by They Might Be Giants. These posts are for the other songs.
The EP tracks. The rarities. The songs that didn’t make the main record but somehow made permanent homes in my life.
This is Kiss Me, Son of Extras.
First off, yes, I skipped a post this weekend. Life got BUSY! Also, this is FREE so I feel little to no guilt over this act of wanton disregard for self-imposed deadlines.
Fortunately for you, today is an anniversary date in TMBG history that brings with it a plethora of fun rarities that I want to share today. On March 25, 1997, the boys released a compilation album called Then: The Earlier Years. This included the full first two albums (Self-Titled Pink Album and Lincoln) plus all B-sides and 19 tracks that had never been heard before.
What a treasure trove for teenage me!
The album art and booklet were illustrated by Tony Millionaire (pictured above), and to commemorate my first 100 subscribers to Kiss Me, Son of Blog, I got that art tattooed on my leg a couple of years ago.
SO…
Here are my current favorite rarities from Then: The Earlier Years, in a carefully curated order. Enjoy.

You’re reading a post from Kiss Me, Son of Extras. A series of posts for the TMBG songs that don’t live on a big studio album. These posts are for the EP tracks, the rarities. The ones tucked away in between bigger releases but are also woven into my actual life.

Open Mike Eagle’s on KEXP performing Qualifiers from his album Dark Comedy. The entire song is SO good. The Weep Day lyrics at the end dealt me 4d8 Radiant damage.
