This song still makes me smile. One of my all-time favorites in my prodigious list of TMBG favorites.

As for alarm-clock songs, I have used "I Will Possess Your Heart" by Death Cab For Cutie for going on 15 years. Something about that initial flourish followed by 5 minutes of instruments building just makes for a pleasant awakening. Granted, it's awakening to the cold, harsh reality of unrequited love, but instrumentally, it's solid.

I really love this pick. Evening having the alarm gradually increase the volume starting from very would be such a great way to wake up.

Like you've said on multiple occasions, for a "jokey" band, TMBG sure wrote/sang about some heavy shit. I think that's what makes the songs so insidious. You get caught up in the catchy, irreverent melodies and then later realize that the words aren't as funny as you first thought. I never had an alarm that I could control what was played. It was either a loud beeping or a staticky radio station. I haven't used an alarm in decades. Not because I don't work, but because my inner clock wakes me up when I need to get up.

I also no longer need an alarm. Not due to my inner alarm but rather the 9 alarms that my wife has set to go off an hour leading up to when she actually has to wake up.

Ha - that's alarming! Yes, I'll be here all night, folks!

My wife thankfully uses one alarm and gets up immediately.

Man, do I feel this entire post on a personal level. I grew up in poverty in Oklahoma (0/10 do NOT recommend). My mom was single after my dad left (and never paid court ordered child support). We survived thanks to food stamps, subsidized housing, and other social programs. I'm 48 and just now out of poverty because my partner makes more than twice what I do. Poverty absolutely can be traumatic on so many levels.
