For the last 37 weeks, I have been posting about each song by They Might Be Giants. Each post is a personal journey inward as I explore my memories and feelings around the song. I share what the song means to me as well as how I feel about it now versus the first time I ever heard it. Recently, I finished writing my way through the band’s sophomore album - Lincoln.
The internet loves a good tier list so with refreshed ears and deep contemplations, I’ve attempted to rank each track on this album. It felt like lining up my own children, looking them in the eyes and telling each one who I like more than the others and who I like the least. This of course is not a sanctioned parenting method of Dr. Spock.
At the bottom of this post, there will be a link for you to make your own picks so that I can share the average reader rankings as well. And again, please, do not come for me.
The Rankings
First off, there are NO songs below a C ranking on this album. Does something HAVE to be an F? No. Not in my world.
The S Tier Songs
Kiss Me, Son of God | Ana Ng | They’ll Need a Crane | Lie Still Little Bottle
The A Tier Songs:
Mr. Me | Cowtown | Purple Toupee | The World’s Address | I’ve Got a Match
The B Tier Songs:
Where Your Eyes Don’t Go | You’ll Miss Me | Piece of Dirt | Cage and Aquarium | Pencil Rain | Stand on Your Own Head
The C Tier Songs:
Shoehorn with Teeth | Santa’s Beard | Snowball in Hell
I had no problem choosing what I felt were the S Tier tracks on this album. A Tier wasn’t too terribly hard but the B and C slots were tricky and songs bumped on and off the A ranking and back and forth until I finally had to base it off how I felt and not pretend to be objective.
We’re all going to have slightly different experiences with these songs. That’s why I would like to give you the opportunity to share your rankings. Fill out my Lincoln Reader Tier Ranking form here and I’ll average out the responses and create your list as a follow up.
How did I do? Do you want to fight me now? I sure hope not.
